A decentralized, open DNS system based on the bitcoin technology.


What is Namecoin

Namecoin is a peer-to-peer generic name/value datastore system based on Bitcoin technology (a decentralized cryptocurrency). It allows you to:

  • Securely register and transfer arbitrary names, no possible censorship!
  • Attach values to the names (up to 1023 bytes)
  • Trade and transact namecoins, the digital currency NMC.

What is Dot-BIT

Dot-BIT, the first project using namecoin, is building a domain name system (DNS) using the .bit TLD. Our goal is to spread .bit domains by providing resources and tools to the community, from developers to end users.

  • March 26, 2012 - We passed 55000 domains!
  • March 18, 2012 - New DNS server by zib : 194.71.109.237
  • January 26, 2012 - New DNS server by chmod755 : 216.231.140.69
  • January 25, 2012 - Release 0.3.24.66 : fix dust spam
  • December 27, 2011 - The dotBit project reached 10000 domain names !
  • December 20, 2011 - Java based GUI for Namecoin called NamecoinJ released!
  • November 19, 2011 - More than 5000 domains registered !
  • November 09, 2011 - 4000 valid domains names reached !
  • November 07, 2011 - Namecoin Bundle : namecoin + proxy for firefox, IE & chrome
  • October 25, 2011 - 3000 valid domains names reached !
  • October 17, 2011 - Security release, upgrade to 0.3.24.64.
  • September 26, 2011 - Official namecoin tree created on github[1]
  • September 18, 2011 - Version 0.3.24.63 released[2] for testing. This version includes a fix for the time warp/zeitgeist attack[3]
  • September 15, 2011 - Threatened 51% attack called off. Work continues on client upgrades. Merged mining still on for block 19200. Bug fix for time warp/zeitgeist[4][5] attacks is in discussion.
  • September 14, 2011 - Updated client software is currently being prepared (with blockchain lockins). Expect to upgrade your clients in the near future, possibly multiple times. Latest development version is 3.24.62[6]. Stay tuned for more info.
  • September 11, 2011 - A miner has threatened a 51% attack on the namecoin blockchain, claiming the attack will begin at block 19101.[7][8][9]
  • September 2011 - Merged Mining to start at block 19200.[10] Please plan to upgrade your clients before then. This is a mandatory upgrade as the validation rules have changed!
  • August 2011 - MasterPool.eu[11] is first pool to announce adoption of Merged Mining. Trials on testnet running.[12]
  • Jul 15, 2011 - Merged Mining between Namecoin and Bitcoin proposed
  • Jul 4, 2011 - 2000 domains reserved
  • Jun 7, 2011 - 1500 domains reserved
  • May 18, 2011 - 500 domains reserved
